never fade in the dark
To be completely honest with himself, Kristmar didn't see the big deal the other teens his age saw in Halloween. The cheap thrill they got out of drinking while sweltering under wigs, tacky costumes and layers of make-up was totally lost on him. He'd been to one of those parties once - a fancy-dress, not exactly a Halloween one but it's almost the same thing - and after two hours he'd already been badgering his friend to give him a lift home. There were only so many scantily dressed girls and so much forced social interaction Kristmar could stomach in one night before fleeing to the tranquil safety of his dormitory. The fair-haired child was far from the outgoing party type. He was more the... gentle, introverted music junkie type.
So anyway, tonight was Halloween and the sun had barely gone down but he could already here a dorm a few doors down start to get boisterous and noisy. It was going to be a long night if they were thumping and plodding around irritatingly so soon into the night. The skinny teen gave a soft, resigned sigh and slipped out of his bed quilted with mauve blankets in search of something to distract himself with. Whereas most students in the college dorms - including his roommate - were preening themselves and heading down to various spooky-themed social events, Krissy was in a pair of puffin-printed pyjama bottoms and an oversized shirt, ready to wind down with a book, some music and a bag of gummy bears.
Okay, fine, there was one thing he thoroughly enjoyed about the thirty-first of October and that was the candy pouring out of every store and the possibility of buying an armload without a stranger's judging gaze.
With a heavier sigh, Kristmar - or better known as Felix - increased the volume slightly on his iPod plugged into the stereo deck in an attempt to drown out the private pre-parties in nearby dorms and the raucous laughter and shrieks of people taking the party to the streets. Some Chopin ought to do the trick until he dozed off. And hopefully his roommate wouldn't come thundering in with the grace of an elephant come the early hours of the morning when he returned from wherever the hell he was. Probably a house party or something along those lines. Whatever. He popped a chewy bear into his mouth as he slunk back into his sea of blankets, blotting out the nuisance noises trying to penetrate the paper-thin walls of his dorm with the soothing song of a piano lulling him to sleep.
