♦ [smear:3d3d3d]WORK HANDS[/smear:6b3600] ♦
The indispensable backbone of the settlement.
These guys are who keep the community running smoothly by taking up all class of menial but essential jobs. They keep the camp fed and watered, look after the farming plots and livestock, tend to the sick and injured, maintain the barriers, give a sense of society, fill in for offense or defense when there's worrying shortages of manpower and just any job that the other groups wouldn't do.
Some call these guys the underdogs of their community, due to how they help to its main purpose on the sidelines. Others, mostly the more prickly offense faction, despise the grubbers for their notably easier way of life and look down at them. A select few go as far as believing that the work hands are below them and are solely there to support the stronger, braver and bloodied offensive groups. So, yes, there's been a few clashes between the work hands and the foot soldiers although such behavior isn't tolerated.
Workers are required to wear a BROWN handkerchief somewhere on their body. The head worker's handkerchief will also have a golden star embroidered on it.

♦ [smear:3d3d3d]SCOUTS[/smear:006b36] ♦
The eyes and ears of the community beyond the barriers.
Swift, quiet and light on their feet, this group's purpose is keeping tabs on potentially hostile groups, finding straggles of survivors looking for sanctuary, monitoring infected hordes at a safe distance and generally just in charge of gathering information of the city that surrounds them to help the bulky offense team plot plans of attack and extermination. They also keep their eyes open for notably large quantities of supplies that haven't yet been pillaged.
They don't use firearms or weapons that cause too much noise to avoid attracting the attention of the subject(s) they might be observing or give away their position to a possible horde. Their best choice is silent, ranged weaponry such as a bow and arrow or a formidable crossbow. Gun with suppressors (silencers) aren't used as they do in fact make more noise that you'd expect. Speed and accuracy is a scout's main strength.
Most go out on foot but sometimes horses are used, especially if a scout has a large distance to cover but these aren't supplied by the settlement for them. They know where the various 'safe spots' in the city are located. Its largest danger is, like everyone's who ventures past the wall, wandering right into a nest and being overwhelmed and being surprised by the very same group of bandits that they're supposed to be following.
Scouts are required to wear a MINT GREEN handkerchief somewhere on their body. The head scout's handkerchief will also have a golden star embroidered on it.

♦ [smear:3d3d3d]FORAGERS[/smear:a6b000] ♦
The settlement's polished and handy 'swiss army knife'.
Out of all the people living in the camp, the ones that make this group are probably the most useful and versatile. They possess a range of abilities and a good handful of them help the other groups when they're not needed. They must know how to wield at least one weapon of choice with a certain level of skill, possess enough athletic prowess to, for example, hoist themselves onto balconies or sprint with a considerably heavy backpack, a locked door can't be an obstacle for them and climbing, crawling and getting dirty shouldn't be an issue.
Their main task is finding items needed by the settlement. When the community was first founded they were the ones in charge of finding food for everyone but, after a couple of months, tinned food and the like started to become harder to find without venturing into the deeper and more dangerous areas of the city. It wasn't a viable long-term strategy so that was when more effort was put into farming in a bid to steadily become self-sufficent.
Nowadays Foragers - fondly nicknamed 'rats' for their scavenging ability - are called on to search for mostly gasoline, medicines and medical items, ammunition and weaponry, clothing, blankets and any item which the settlement may require. It isn't unheard of for a scavenger to keep part of the spoils found on an outing although it's frowned on by the other groups who find this sometimes common habit very irritating and selfish.
They work closely with the Scouts at times because there are occasions when this group keeps an eye out for the most needed items and passes on their location for a Forager to pick up later on, plus warning them of any particularly large hordes to avoid or hostile bandit groups.
Foragers are required to wear a MUSTARD YELLOW handkerchief somewhere on their body. The head work hand's handkerchief will also have a golden star embroidered on it.

♦ [smear:3d3d3d]DEFENSE[/smear:006a6b] ♦
The first line of defense against attacks, be them human or undead.
Usually these guys just man the walls, day after night, in all types on weather, making sure no infected draw even near enough to start scraping at the metal and wooden panels. On rare occasions they fend off attacks from other humans trying to raid the camp too.
They can use a great variety of weapons, ranging from bows to rifles to axes. As long as they get the job done no one really cares about what weapon they slug around but most like to keep both a gun or bow and a mêlée weapon on their persona while they protect the wall or workers repairing the wall. They don't have to clear the trenches of rubbish and dead zombies if they don't want to, same with clearing and burning fallen infected corpses, and most of the time they get the work hands to do so, just to get their 'clean, pampered hands a bit dirty'.
It's quite common for the defense and offense factions to have rifts between them.
Defense are required to wear a TEAL BLUE handkerchief somewhere on their body. The head of defense's colour will also have a golden star embroidered on it.

♦ [smear:3d3d3d]OFFENSE[/smear:b61015] ♦
The settlement's weapon against hordes and hostile human threats.
Anyone from this group is often someone you wouldn't want to mess with. The men and women from this faction are the ones sent out from the relative safety of the settlement's barricades with the uncertainty if they'll return on a frequent basis. Their main purpose is to exterminate the infected. The most common task they're sent off to do is go, building by building, eradicating the ghoulish creatures and then sealing the lower doors and windows to prevent them entering again; it keeps the infected out in the open, where they can be seen, so no surprises happen.
On some, less frequent occasions, they're sent out to do away with growing hordes spotted near the settlement before they become a real, worrying threat. And then, on rare occasions, they engage battle with other humans who pose a risk to the settlement's welfare. One or two of these foot soldiers can be sent off on missions assigned to Foragers and Scouts to provide them with a bit more muscle in unexpected and dangerous circumstances.
Like Defense, they're not really required to use a specific kind of weapon just as long as they're good at wielding it. It's recommended that they possess some skill with a melee weapon and a firearm though. Any experience in hand-to-hand combat is greatly useful in this faction also.
It takes guts to be part of this faction as it's not for the weak of heart and death is a possibility that these soldiers have to live with every time they leave for a mission. But, for that, they're admired in a way by many other members of the community. Except, mostly, by the Defense faction who do often get a piece of the action themselves except aren't so glorified for it. Offense and Defense can butt heads like two goats over a can at times. Soldiers stationed in Offense can often be annoyed and vocal at the easy way of life able-bodied Workers have at times. They're the most antagonistic group in the settlement, along with Defense.
Offense are required to wear a CRIMSON RED handkerchief somewhere on their body. The head of Offense's colour will also have a golden star embroidered on it.
